Soon-to-Graduate Students:
Turn Connections Into Opportunities
Graduation is around the corner — now is the time to leverage your network to secure internships and full-time roles.
Tips to maximize your job search:
Network with professionals in your field: Attend workshops, competitions, and career events — opportunities rarely find you on their own.
Follow up with mentors and recruiters: In the U.S., persistence and relationship-building are key.
Plan your timeline carefully: CPT and OPT periods are critical for gaining work experience and positioning yourself for H-1B opportunities.
A proactive approach now can make your transition from campus to career seamless and successful.
Alumni & Graduates:
Stay Competitive and Connected
Even after graduation, maintaining your professional edge is crucial:
Keep in touch with professors, advisors, and student organizations: Your network grows stronger when you maintain these relationships.
Mentor current students: Giving back builds visibility and reinforces your professional reputation.
Stay informed about immigration policies: Changes in F-1, OPT, or H-1B rules could impact your future opportunities.
Remember: 💡 Networking isn’t about collecting contacts — it’s about building meaningful relationships that open doors to internships, jobs, and H-1B opportunities.
📢 Important Updates for F-1 Students
Possible End of Duration of Status (D/S)
Current: Students remain in F-1 for the full program duration.
Proposed: Students may be admitted for a fixed period (likely up to 4 years). Extensions required for longer programs or OPT.
Impact: Extra paperwork, fees, and careful planning — especially for longer programs e.g. PhD or extended OPT.
H-1B Lottery Changes
Current: Random lottery, with extra chances for U.S. master’s holders.
Proposed: Lottery may favor higher salaries, which could affect entry-level positions and smaller employers.
How to Prepare:
Plan your CPT/OPT/H-1B timeline carefully with your DSO
Maintain proof of F-1 compliance
Target employers offering higher salaries or cap-exempt options
Use OPT/STEM OPT strategically
Stay informed during public comment periods
Click the green ‘Submit Public Comment’ button near the top of the page and follow the simple instructions to share your voice.
In the search box, type ICEB-2025-0001.
Click on the proposed rule, then select “Comment.”
Share your story—be concise, reasonable, and provide real examples of how this rule would affect you.
Note: In 2020, a similar proposal was withdrawn after overwhelming public opposition.
What This Means for International Students
| Challenge | What You Can Do |
|---|---|
| Shorter automatic stay (up to ~4 years) | Plan ahead with your DSO to avoid any gaps in status. Keep clear documentation of full-time enrollment, OPT/CPT approvals, and no unauthorized work. |
| More paperwork & potential denials for extensions | Maintain a clean and organized record of your F-1 compliance—always stay up to date with I-20s and DSOs. |
| Reduced H-1B odds if your job pays less | Target employers who offer higher wages. Explore internships or work opportunities with cap-exempt entities (like universities or research institutions). |
| Uncertainty around future rule changes | Monitor updates closely—USCIS must publish these proposals publicly and open a 60-day comment period before finalizing anything. (masudafunai.com) |
As of August 20, 2025, these rules are not final yet, but you should know and prepare for possible changes.
✨ Bottom line:
The U.S. immigration system may add new steps in the future, but with good planning, students can still succeed. Staying informed now gives you an advantage.
Early planning and strategic networking are essential for job search success, CPT/OPT utilization, and H-1B readiness.

Whether you’re just starting out, approaching graduation, or already working professionally, Fall 2025 is your season for growth. Build your network, engage with mentors, and stay informed about work authorization rules — the connections you make now could shape your career for years to come.
💙 Here’s to a Fall 2025 full of career growth, strong connections, and professional breakthroughs!
