International students cannot simply choose to work in any role or any field they desire. They need to be strategic.

Due to the fact that US employers will have to sponsor international students in the future, applying for jobs as a generalist or for a non-technical role will not work in their favor. Besides, as an international student, to become eligible for their OPT, they also need to choose to work in a role that is aligned with their academic degree.

This course will help international students define their career goal that helps increase their chances of getting job interviews and eventually getting hired.

  1. Students will learn techniques on how to define clear career goals and build an understanding of how human resources professionals analyze candidates.
  2. Students will learn how to remain focused on a certain career path by doing research on market demand and linking their own experiences and skills to a certain position.
  3. Students will learn how to become desirable candidates in the eyes of hiring managers based on their career goals and relevant experiences.
  4. Students will learn how to remain relevant with the needs of the employer by identifying the skills needed for their desired jobs and the key competencies of each role.
  1. How do I increase the chances of getting interviews after applying for jobs?
  2. How do I start writing a job-specific resume?
  3. How do I define what job I should target as an international student?
  4. How do I start building my career brand?

It can be extremely intimidating to network and be interviewed. It can be even more intimidating when you have language and cultural barriers.

From a survey asking over 100 international students

“Do you feel at ease and confident during a job interview in the U.S?”

only 10% of the students said that “they feel very comfortable about it.”

The job interview is one of the most intimidating recruitment processes for international students.

This course will present techniques to approach job interviews strategically and help international students position themselves as business problem solvers.

  1. Students will learn techniques on how to create a conversation with interviewers in order to uncover the employer’s true needs for a position.
  2. Students will learn how the entire hiring process works, beginning from how a position is opened up to the different components of the interview process.
  3. Students will learn how to customize their answers in a way that demonstrates to the interviewer that they are the perfect candidate for the job.
  4. Students will learn how to perform research in order to find out what the company culture is like so that they can position themselves as a good cultural fit.
  1. How do I perform well during a screening interview?
  2. How do I perform well during an in-person interview?
  3. How do I make conversation during an interview?
  4. How do I conduct research on company culture?
  5. Which unforeseen obstacles might place someone out of their candidacy?

Become confident in building a professional mentorship network in the US.

Play Video about icaway-student

I launched a survey among over 100 international students across the US asking

“Do you have a mentor in the U.S.?”

10% of the students said that “they don’t know what a mentor is.”

75% of them said that “they do not have a mentor in the US.”,

and only 22% said that “they have a meaningful relationship with their mentor(s).”

Finding mentors will give opportunities to students to improve essential skills and tap into a hidden job market. Unfortunately, not so many international students know how to do that.

This course will help international students change the way they think about networking and shift their mindset from thinking of networking as intimidating to something attainable and inspiring. They will also learn ways to build trust and engagement with professionals and turn them into their career advocates.

  1. Students will learn from the experience of a fellow international student how to get internship opportunities via building meaningful connections.
  2. Students will learn techniques to overcome difficulties with building new connections in the U.S.
  3. Students will learn to perfect the art of asking and increase their chances of turning their new connections into strong ties.
  1. What is a “meaningful connection”?
  2. What are the benefits of building meaningful connections?
  3. How can I start building meaningful connections?
  4. What happens if I don’t network in the U.S.?
  5. What are the options for networking? Online/In-person?
  6. What are the effective methods of networking?
  7. In my country, people don’t just randomly talk to strangers. What’s the best way for me to adjust to networking in the U.S.?
