Speaker Bio

Kwan Segal, SPHR, is the Founder & CEO of ICAway, a cross-cultural career readiness and educational consulting organization dedicated to strengthening international student success across higher education. Since founding ICAway in 2017, she has partnered with colleges, universities, and professional associations across the United States to deliver keynote presentations, professional development workshops, and student career programs that bridge international education, career readiness, and workforce outcomes.

Drawing on more than 20 years of experience in human capital consulting, talent development, and workforce strategy, Kwan helps institutions strengthen cross-campus collaboration while equipping international students to navigate the transition from education to employment. Her work combines research-informed practice with practical implementation, helping educators build institutional capacity and helping students develop the confidence and strategies needed to succeed in today’s global workforce.

A former consultant with Deloitte and Accenture, Kwan brings both employer insight and lived experience as an international professional to her work.

 Through ICAway, she has supported students from more than 30 countries and over 100 universities, with alumni securing internships and full-time opportunities at organizations including Google, Microsoft, Amazon, and other leading employers.

About the university

  • UW-Madison is a top-ranked research institution in the midwest with international students making up about 14.5% of the student body.

Situation

  • Through our collaboration, we hosted a 1 hour webinar on Navigating Recruitment as an International Student. The event discussed holistic career planning starting from being aware of different visa options, approaches to increasing your chances for job interviews, to following up with employers. 
  • Before the event, students who participated in the survey indicated that their level of confidence in searching for a job in the US was mostly somewhat confident and not very confident. 

Post event results

  • After the webinar event, international students at this university felt empowered and excited about networking in the American job field. Every student who took the survey after the webinar event went from not feeling confident to either “somewhat confident” or “very confident”. Each student felt that they had the ability to take action for their futures. With the information from speakers, UW-Madison staff members established a new home base on the website specifically for supporting international students.
