Eva personally understands the ambition that comes from wanting to succeed, but not quite knowing where to start. Luckily for Eva, she had wonderful mentors and supporters who guided her academic journey. Now Eva wants to be able to be as encouraging and welcoming as her own mentors were.
Eva works at UAlbany as a Benefits and Engagement associate. In her role, she is charged with managing employee benefits programs. Helping with enrollment, ensuring everyone knows their deadlines and options, as well as coordinating with vendors. Although Eva does not frequently interact with international students, she often acknowledges that every interaction, no matter how big or small, can have an impact on an individual.
Recently, Eva joined iCEP, where she was able to learn how to care and expand her knowledge on cross-cultural communication.
What inspired you to join the iCEP Academy, and how do you hope it will shape your work with international students?
“I was inspired by the work we do with international students here in Human Resources. Though I don’t interact with them daily, I’m motivated to make those rare interactions count by ensuring they are meaningful and culturally conscious.”
How has the iCEP experience so far inspired you or reinforced your passion for supporting international students?
“My passions have certainly been reinforced with the added understanding of cultures outside of my own. I am a firm believer that you can learn from and seek mentorship from anyone, as long as you are both willing to understand each other. Additionally, seeking advice or information from someone who isn’t necessarily in your culture can broaden your understanding of networking or advocating for yourself. The iCEP experience has encouraged me to research different cultures to make that process seamless.”
What advice would you give to others thinking about joining the iCEP Academy?
“Don’t start the iCEP academy expecting to be an expert on specific cultures, but rather to learn how to further your curiosity and the possible nuances that shape international students’ worries and perspectives. Cultures can change, and further barriers can appear; therefore, a dedication to compassion must remain.”
Although Evan does not interact with international students often, her dedication to making every interaction count, no matter how small or how big. Enabling her to create a more welcoming and empathetic space.
