“I have been working with international students and scholars since 2003. My passion comes from a personal place, as I want to support international students the same way I would want someone to support my own son if he were studying abroad. Every student deserves representation, guidance, support and belonging.”

When Tara Evans first began working with international students, she quickly realized that supporting them went far beyond processing paperwork—it required understanding, empathy, and a genuine commitment to helping each student thrive in a new cultural environment. For Tara, that commitment is personal: “I want to support international students the same way I would want someone to support my own son if he were studying abroad. Every student deserves representation, guidance, support, and belonging.”
Tara’s journey in international education spans over 14 years. She earned a BA in Business from Life University in Marietta, Georgia, followed by an MA in Human Resource Management from Nova Southeastern University in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. Over time, she has developed a deep interest in campus internationalization—finding ways to make higher education a more globally inclusive and welcoming experience.
Today, Tara leads new international student orientation and oversees the vibrant J-1 scholar community at the University at Albany. Her role also extends across campus: she serves on the Residency Appeals Committee, acts as Liaison for Community Standards, and partners with Academic Advising to help students succeed academically and personally. Beyond campus, she contributes to the broader professional community as a member of NAFSA and a proud graduate of the NAFSA Academy (Class 10).
Tara recently joined the iCEP Academy to deepen her cross-cultural skills and enhance her advocacy for international students. Reflecting on her experience so far, she shared: “iCEP has been inspiring and motivating. It reminds me why I entered this field—to help international students, build bridges between cultures, create a sense of belonging, and encourage students to thrive.”
What inspired you to join the iCEP Academy, and how do you hope it will shape your work with international students?
“I wanted to deepen my cross-cultural skills and advocacy. Working with international students requires not only administrative skills but also empathy and cultural awareness. iCEP will give me an opportunity to gain new strategies to help international students feel successful both academically and professionally.”

“The iCEP experience has been inspiring and motivating as it reminds me of why I entered this field, to help international students. It has reinforced my commitment to building bridges between cultures, creating a sense of belonging, and encouraging students to thrive.”
What advice would you give to others thinking about joining the iCEP Academy?
“I would tell others to join iCEP as it provides valuable strategies like encouraging international students to network with professionals. iCEP allows those working with international students additional advising strategies. iCEP encourages personal and career growth.”
What excites you most about the upcoming modules and how you can apply what you’ve learned to your work?
“I’m excited about the chance to keep building on the knowledge I have gained so far and to explore new approaches to supporting international students. The modules provide tools and perspectives that I can apply immediately in my role.”
Through her dedication, expertise, and empathy, Tara Evans exemplifies the impact one committed advisor can have on the lives of international students—helping them feel supported, connected, and ready to succeed in a global community.
